Fay L. Gullion was born in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana, on September 5, 1902, the son of Alonzo and Anna Belle Gullion. He received his elementary and high school education in West Lebanon, Warren County, schools and graduated from Browns Business College, Danville, Illinois, in 1921. He later studied Corporate Accounting and Commercial Law through Northwestern University extension classes.
He was employed by Armour and Company in various capacities for 46 years and retired as Special Accounts Representative in 1967. He then served as a Deputy Clerk in the Probate Court, Franklin County, Columbus, Ohio for a number of years.
He married the former Virginia Ann McCallister of Huntington, West Virginia. To this marriage one daughter was born. There are four grandchildren. Mrs. Gullion preceded him in death in November 1984.
He was a member of Brookwood Presbyterian Church in Columbus. He served his church as a Deacon, an Elder, a Trustee and twice Chairman of the Board. He also served as General Chairman of the Building Committee.
He was made a Master Mason in Irvington Lodge No. 666, F. & A. M. Indianapolis, Indiana, in November 1943. He dimitted to Bexley Lodge No. 704, Bexley, Ohio, in 1948 and served as its Worshipful Master in 1955. He served for many years on the Board of Trustees of the Bexley Temple Corporation.
He was a member of the Ralph R. Rickly Chapter No. 220 of Royal Arch Masons; Kings Council No. 142, Royal and Select Masters; Mt. Vernon Commandery No.1, Knights Templar; and A. A. S. R., Valley of Columbus, where he presided in the Twenty-ninth Degree for many years. He was a member of St. Jerome Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine. He was crowned an Honorary Member of the Supreme Council, 33°, in Detroit in September 1964.
He also held membership in Aladdin Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., was a member of the Reception Unit, Charter Member of the Past Masters U nit, and an Ambassador.
He was a member of Eastern Star, Bexley Chapter No. 524, Achbar Grotto, and the Ohio Lodge of Research and National Sojourners. He held honorary memberships in several Ohio Lodges.
He was also a member of the Delmo Club, founder and sponsor of Bexley Chapter, Order of DeMolay, where he served as 2nd Degree advisor for fifteen years and held the Chapter Medal of Appreciation, the DeMolay Cross of Honor, and the Honorary Legion of Honor.
He served as Grand Representative for the Grand Lodge of West Virginia near the Grand Lodge of Ohio. In October 1957 he was appointed by M. W. Brother Andrew J. White, Jr., to serve as District Deputy Grand Master for the 14th Masonic District. He was subsequently appointed D. D. G. M. by M. W. Brother Chester Hodges and M. W. Brother Charles K. Cunningham. In 1961-1962 he served the 14th District as District Education Officer.
M. W. Brother, Edgar L. Ott, Grand Master, appointed him Junior Grand Deacon in October 1964 and he served in the various appointive and elective stations of the Grand Lodge until elected and installed as M. W. Grand Master on 23 October 1971, in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was a valued member of the Advisory Committee of the Grand Lodge and was serving as Chairman of the Jurisprudence Committee at the time of his death.
M. W. Brother Gullion passed away in Columbus on 13 July 1985, a few weeks after undergoing heart surgery. A valued friend and advisor to many and a respected leader in all of his endeavors, he will be sorely missed by all who mourn his passing.
Following cremation, a memorial service was held at Brookwood Presbyterian Church, Saturday, July 20, 1:00 p.m. A Masonic memorial service was held at 11:45 a.m., July 20, in the Bexley Masonic Temple.
