M. W. Brother George L. Marshall was born on October 17, 1862, in New York City, New York. From there he went to Detroit, Michigan. In 1888 he moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he resided up to the time of his death.
On June 23, 1880, he married Miss Jennie Leota McDonald. Two sons: George N. and Gaylord L., and a daughter Helen M. blessed their home.
He associated himself with the Dayton Steam Boiler Company, which later was incorporated as the Graves and Marshall Company, of which he was president, until his death. He was also a director of the Marshall Realty Company. From the cares of his business life, he found relaxation in fishing during the summer months. Firm in principle, he was a staunch supporter of all that would promote righteousness in City, State, and Nation. He was an ideal citizen. He was a member of Exchange Luncheon Club and also the Miami Valley Golf Club.
M. W. Brother Marshall was initiated the Entered Apprentice Degree n St. Johns Lodge No. 13, F. & A. M., Dayton, on May 2, 1896; passed to the Degree of Fellow Craft June 6, 1896, and was raised to the sublime Degree of Master Mason June 22, 1896. In his Lodge he held the offices of Junior Deacon, Senior Deacon, Junior Warden, Senior Warden, and was Worshipful Master in 1902 and 1903.
He was made a Mark Master, November 23, 1896; Past Master and Most Excellent Master, December 7, 1896, and Royal Arch Mason, December 11, 1896, in Unity Chapter No. 16, R. A. M., which he served as Royal Arch Captain, Principal Sojourner, Captain of the Host, Scribe, King, and was Most Excellent High Priest in 1909. He was Grand Steward of the Grand Chapter R. A. M. of Ohio in 1912. He was made a Royal Master, Select Master, and Super- Excellent Master in Reese Council No, 9, R. & S. M., Dayton, Ohio, on January 4, 1897. He served as Thrice Illustrious Master in 1903.
He was knighted in Reed Commandery No.6, K, T., receiving the Order of the Red Cross, January 3, 1899; Order of Knight of Malta, January 8, 1899, and Order of Knight Templar, January 8, 1899.
In the Scottish Rite, he received the degrees in Gabriel Lodge of Perfection, 14°, November I5, 1900; in Miami Council, Princes of Jerusalem, 16°, November 16, 1900; in Dayton Chapter Rose Croix, 18°, November 16, 1900; and in Ohio Consistory, 32°, Cincinnati, Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret, February 21, 22, 1901. He was crowned a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, 33°, and Honorary Member of the Supreme Council Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, on September 16, 1913. In March 1899, he was made a Noble of the Mystic Shrine in Antioch Temple, Dayton, and served as Potentate in 1907.
In the Grand Lodge of Ohio he was appointed Grand Marshall, October 1906-1907, Grand Orator, October, 1910; elected Junior Grand Warden, October, 1911; Senior Grand Warden, October, 1912; Deputy Grand Master, October, 1913, and Grand Master, October 22, 1914. As a Past Grand Master, he was a valued member on many Committees, but rendered distinctive service as Chairman of the Grievance Committee.
M. W. Brother Marshall departed this life December 15, 1938. Funeral services were held in the Masonic Temple, Dayton, Ohio, with Rev. George Sonneborn, pastor of Central Reformed Evangelical Church, officiating. Interment was at Grove Hill Cemetery, Section P, Lot 48, Shelbyville, Kentucky.
