Brother Clifford E. Nicol, from our This is Ohio Freemasonry Campaign this past fall, gave us his thoughts on being a Freemason, joining the fraternity, and his favorite brotherhood activities in the Q and A session below. As a Veteran, Software Development Specialist and Martial Artist, Clifford has a unique perspective on Masonic values and we were so grateful to have him share a part of his story with us.

How did you join/want to join Freemasonry?
It runs in my family. When growing up I always admired the Masons and always wanted to be one of them. They carried themselves with dignity and were highly respected in our communities.
What does Freemasonry mean to you?
Freemasonry has afforded me the opportunity to expand my friendship with men throughout the world, who under normal circumstances our paths would never cross. I have learned a lot from these men, the moral teachings of our ceremonies and the doctrine upon which Freemasonry stands. Freemasonry has inspired me to look introspectively of myself and improve on my characters that are inherently good and continue to work on those that I struggle with.
How do you incorporate Masonic values into everyday life?
I use my Masonic Values as constant reminder to live a virtuous life. As I struggle with the daily challenges of life, I try to make an effort to tap into the reservoir of my Masonic Values to help me withstand those challenges. I also try to be an example to those around me in the hope of making a positive influence in their lives.
What is your favorite thing to do with your Brothers?
I like to build a strong and genuine friendship with my Brothers through meaningful conversations or discussions. This can be either in the form of Masonic or Non-Masonic discussion. I just enjoy intriguing conversations and the art of sharing knowledge. When given the opportunity, I also enjoy mentoring others to become their best self notwithstanding that I also enjoy learning from others to see how best I can improve myself.
What is one piece of advice you would give to a new Mason?
No matter what it is, get involved in your Fraternal Organization. As the saying goes, “the more you put in it, the more you will get out of it.”
