The family of Lyndon Parsons, age 10 of Toledo, Ohio, recently sent a thank you note regarding the support of Ohio Freemasons for Special Olympics.

Lyndon won a gold medal in the Softball Throw on Saturday, June 26, 2010 and placed 4th in the 100 meter dash.  He is the son of Lisa and Anthony Parsons, a member of Paragon Lodge #788.  His grandfathers Marion Parsons and Gerald Davis are also members of Paragon #788.

In the note, the family wished to, "thank all members of the Ohio Masonic Lodges who gave so generously to this wonderful event.  If you have never participated in the Columbus Special Olympics, we invite you to do so in 2011.  As a family, we appreciate your support [...]!"

Grand Secretary Rocks the House 60s-Style

Saturday, July 10 was the second reunion concert of The Nomads, a Dayton-area rock-n-roll band from the mid 1960s.  The concert was held at the Brookville VFW for an audience of around 300 people.

The Nomads, like many other bands of that era, was started by high schools students with a love of rock-n-roll.  One of the things that sets them apart is that their bass guitar player is the Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Ohio, C. Michael Watson.

“When Mike mentioned the band’s reunion to the Grand Lodge office staff, we thought we’d surprise him by making the trek to Brookville, but we were the ones who were surprised,” said Gayle Kozak.  “The band really sounded great!”

According to the Dayton Daily News, “four of the band members are Brookville graduates — Doug Rasor (1966), rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Tom Fryman (’68), drummer Gary Patterson (’68) and drummer Bob Clemmons (’65). Bass player Mike Watson is a graduate of West Milton (’66).”

The band was formed in 1964, played together for four years and even cut a record.  The band’s career was cut short when members left to start families, attend college, and join the military.

Dayton Officer and Firefighter Honored

While there are hundreds of men and women who make up the Dayton Police and Fire Departments, on Thursday, September 17, two of them stood out.

Officer Chuck Hurley and Lt. Adam Landis recieved the Community Service Award from the Dayton Masonic Temple.

"They need to be recognized, they are putting their lives on the line," said Earl Lutz, past Master of the Masonic Lodge. "They all need our appreciation".

Officer Hurley is a 20 year veteran on the Dayton Police Department. In addition to being a police officer, he has also spent two decades serving with the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He is a member of the Lima Company.

"To me, if that isn''t community service, I don''t know what is," said Sgt. Bill Keller, who nominated Hurley for the honor.

"It''s my job. In police and fire work you choose to serve," said Officer Hurley. "You don''t get to pick when and where, it''s just whatever the cards deal you".

In the case of Dayton Firefighter Adam Landis, the cards dealt a Christmas Day he won''t soon forget. "It was a very trying run," said Landis. "There were a lot of elements involved".

Landis was recognized for his role in a crash scene rescue. December 25, 2008, several children were trapped under a car. Officials said Landis climbed underneath the twisted metal so he could stabilize a young girl. As a result of his heroic efforts, she survived.

"I was just doing my job," said Landis. "Anybody else would have done the same thing".

But members of the Dayton Masonic Lodge don''t agree and that''s why this is the 5th year they have handed out Community Service Awards.
